The FARAGIR PROJECT
WAHIDA's story

Meet Wahida, an Afghan woman determined to build a better future for her family. Living in a remote, mountainous region of Afghanistan, life has always been tough.
'But a few years ago, her family was struggling to get by. “We faced extreme poverty, with no reliable source of income,” she explained. “My brothers migrated to a neighbouring province
and had to work in coal mines to earn some income.”
Like many women in her village, her opportunities were limited. “I began schooling at the age of five, but was unable to continue beyond the 10th grade”, Wahida explained. “Many women, including myself, faced both financial and emotional hardships.” Without a clear way to find work, Wahida worried about how to provide for her young children.
However, when Afghanaid visited Wahida’s village to support women like her, it symbolised an opportunity for change. Through the Faragir project, Wahida received comprehensive training in skills designed to improve her ability to earn her own income.

I gained essential skills and knowledge
in sewing... life skills, proper financial management, and how to start a small business.”

'Afghanaid provided me with 19,750 Afghanis in cash assistance. They also gave me a prayer mat, a flashlight, a radio, children’s toys, clothing for men and women, soap, shampoo, a toothbrush and toothpaste and other similar items...These items brought great peace to my mind.'
Inspired by her learnings, she was able to take her newfound skills further, by opening her own tailoring shop. Afghanaid supported her with the tools she needed to do so.

“I received a complete set of sewing equipment, including a sewing machine, zigzag machine, scissors, measuring tape, sewing table, stool, iron, gas cylinder, fabrics, and other essential tools. These resources enabled me to establish my own tailoring workspace, enhance my skills, and produce garments not only for my family’s use but also for sale in the local market."
Today, Wahida is a proud businesswoman, earning a reliable wage and putting food on the table, whilst also saving regularly through a women’s self-help group. Looking ahead, she hopes to expand her business and is optimistic about what the future holds.

This journey has been more than an educational opportunity; it has been a major step toward self-sufficiency, confidence, and improvement in our family’s economic and social wellbeing.
